Do not forget

Not the poverty from which you came from

Not the nights you heard your stomach growl

Not the fights inside your soul

None shall you forget

Do not forget the humble pie you had to swallow

Not the God you cried out to

Not the days you wished for a hole to hide

Not the cries that were in vain

Not the dawn that seemed to evade you

Not your tribe that was permanently singular

Not the beauty that diminished each day

Not the smile that seemed too much to prepare

Not the voice that spoke no reason

The eyes used only for weeping

The body shrunken from digesting wishing and hoping

Do not forget

We dare not forget

For if we shall

There is a reminder in someone’s eyes

A reminder not to disregard

That we are an African united

An Africa dying as one

A South Africa losing each other

A Zulu nation singing weeping songs

A woman living dying in Africa.

Lest ye forget

Do not, for the price of remembrance

Is too high.

If pillows could talk

If pillows could talk
Would they whisper
The sentiments of my heart
The silent pleas
Of come back
I miss you so

Would they shout to the world
I love you!
Why or why?
This, that

Would they sssstutter
In confusion
In anger…
In betrayal

Would they dilvuge memories
Of tumbles suffocating them.
Intertwined scents.
Would they inform you
Of my tears.
My hatred of life
My sorrow, depression
Would pillows
Share my deepest
Most withheld
Emotions with them?

I hurt you

I hurt you
Without realising
I’m hurting me more
I harm without seeing
 The  scars on my body

I scribble words
Manifested in anger and betrayal
In insecurity and dishonesty.
I scribble them with all
Intents and purposes to make you
Smell, feel, taste my hurt.

But ultimately I hurt more
Ultimately I crush myself
By compressing you
I’m sorry - seems too little
I was wrong – too late
For the deed is done
The anger and pain already evident
And hard to erase

Still I humble myself
And ask your forgiveness…
I’m sorry

Arise

Arise
Arise
Arise from thy state
Of unworthiness
To a King or Queen
You were born to be
Stand tall in thy statue
To a crown awaiting thee
Walk on thy path in front
And your feet strong as steel

Arise
From the pool of blood
Surrounding from head to toe
Thy spirit crippled
Stand up to face the giant
That left you for dead.
Walk away from a life history
Before it caught up with you

Arise
From the words tearing
The soul you barely feel
Stand tall with ears shut
And a wall built to protect you
Walk on before the wall breaks
And you perform an act of regret
Arise
Arise
Arise

Just a while longer

Just a while longer

A saint I never was
For I knew not what it was
An innocent was never me
For I understood every consequence
All my sins I bear
For all I knew and comprehended.

But my measly life was all I knew
My measly soul was all I had
My measly body was all I used
To sin and live and sin in life
Even my creator surely knows
The life of a sin I lived
And the sin of life I died.

For every time an ounce of me
Wished for the end
He seemed to smile and say
“Just a while longer”
“For what?” my fury raged
“Just a while longer”

The pain in every bone in my body
Every tissue and sinew
Every molecule and microfibre
But His smile shines on
“Just a while longer”.
